Story angles

  1. Paintings made in VR, shown as AR.

Work born in one immersive medium crosses into another, hung in a physical room.

  2. An artist-built platform, free for the community.

After watching platform after platform get built and shut down, an artist built and maintains one herself: Spatial Design Club.

  3. The research lens.

An immersive media psychology researcher and lab director on what happens to people in these experiences, and why community matters.

  4. Hardware almost nobody has touched.

Snap Specs are developer hardware, not sold in stores. A free public demo in a St. Johns public house is an access story.

  5. Plants making the art.

Biophonic uses signals from living plants, not the artist’s hand, to shape sound and image. It showed at the inaugural AWE Art Festival and in Snap’s keynote.

  6. Gifts with a second life.

Holiday shopping for AR prints, postcards and originals made by Portland artists.

Full Spectrum: Portland Artists Turn Technology Into a Prism for the Human Spirit

A free immersive art exhibition featuring augmented and virtual reality opens November 7 at Daydreamer Coffee & Public House in St. Johns

Artists have always pushed the newest tools of their time to their edges, from the stereoscope of the 1800s to the video art of Nam June Paik. Today that edge is augmented and virtual reality, and much of the art made with it is rarely seen by the public. It lives on hardware that isn’t sold in stores, at industry conferences most people never attend, or on platforms that shut down and take the work with them. Full Spectrum gathers that work in one neighborhood room. The free exhibition opens Saturday, November 7, 2026, at Daydreamer Coffee & Public House in St. Johns and runs through December 29.

A prism doesn’t add color to light. It reveals the colors already there. The artists in Full Spectrum use augmented and virtual reality the same way, as a lens on human feeling and connection. Prints and sculptures come alive in the room around you, and paintings made in virtual reality step into physical space. Visitors can explore much of the work with their own phones, no app needed, any time Daydreamer is open.

Many of the works are for sale, from AR prints to original pieces. With the show running through the holiday season, it’s a chance to find one-of-a-kind gifts made by Portland artists.

The opening reception runs from 6 to 10 p.m. on November 7. Artists will present their work, and visitors can try pieces made for VR headsets, as well as AR glasses not yet available to the public. The night closes with a live generative audio and visual performance by Reese Bowes. More programming, including free XR workshops and artist talks, will be announced throughout the run.

The show’s artists have held residencies with Adobe, Google, and Cartoon Network, been featured by Forbes, and won an Emmy Award. Part of the show runs on Spatial Design Club, a free webAR platform that curator Kami Karras maintains for the creative community. Full Spectrum is sponsored by Snap Specs, the University of Oregon’s Reality Lab, Gango Custom Printing, and Daydreamer Coffee & Public House.

Curators: Kami Karras, Dr. Danny Pimentel, Heather Dunaway Smith, Estella Tse.

About 100 words

Full Spectrum is a group exhibition of Portland XR artists at Daydreamer Coffee & Public House in St. Johns, running November 7 through December 29, 2026. Just as a prism shows the colors hidden in light, these artists use immersive technology to bring out the hidden layers of the human heart. Visitors can scan works with their own phones any time Daydreamer is open. At the opening reception, they can also try headsets and Snap Specs, AR glasses not yet available to the public. The show celebrates technology as a way to amplify human expression and helps grow Portland’s immersive community. Free and open to the public.
